What Is the EU Blue Card?
The EU Blue Card is the most attractive residence permit for highly qualified professionals from non-EU countries who want to work in Germany. With a recognised university degree and a job offer above the minimum salary threshold, it offers advantages no ordinary work visa can match: immediate family reunification, EU-wide mobility, and an accelerated path to the Niederlassungserlaubnis — in as little as 21 months.
Difference from a Standard Work Visa
- No priority check: there is no requirement to verify whether a suitable domestic candidate should be preferred.
- Flexibility: after two years, Blue Card holders can change employer freely.
- Fast track to permanent residence: 21 months (with B1) instead of 5 years.
- EU-wide validity: after 18 months with a Blue Card in one EU state, you can move to another EU member state.
Requirements for the EU Blue Card
1. Recognised University Degree
Your foreign university degree must be equivalent to a German Bachelor's, Master's or Diplom degree. Proof via:
- Anabin database of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education (KMK)
- Statement from the Central Office for Foreign Education (ZAB)
- Individual recognition by the Ausländerbehörde
2. Minimum Salary 2024
Category Annual gross salary Monthly gross
General occupations €45,300 €3,775
Shortage occupations (STEM, IT, medicine) €41,042 €3,420
Note: These thresholds are adjusted annually by the BMAS. Check current figures with the BMAS before applying.
Shortage occupations currently include: IT/computer science, engineering, natural sciences, human medicine, veterinary medicine and pharmacy.
3. Concrete Job Offer
A written employment contract or a binding offer of employment is mandatory. The position must match the academic qualification, and the salary must exceed the threshold.
